Sarah and I rarely argue. It’s one of the many awesome things about our relationship. When we do argue however, it usually involves something like moving furniture, assembling furniture, and/or the laws of physics/gravity/thermodynamics.
I don’t even remember the origins of this particular argument, but somehow or another I began talking about the greatness of Knight Rider. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that Knight Rider is the be-all-end-all of 80′s action television, (that honor belongs to the A-Team,) but who can deny the beauty of a black Pontiac Trans Am with a nifty red light bobbing back and forth on the front end?!
At any rate, we began discussing whether or not it was physically possible to drive a car up onto a semi-trailer while in motion on the freeway. While I won’t divulge the specific nature of the arguments for or against, let’s just say I was adamant in my belief that it was possible, that KITT roaring up onto the trailer was not just some 80′s television special effect. Sarah doubted my belief (along with my taste in action television).
We argued the physics of it to no avail and for many months could not speak of it without the underlying tension rearing its ugly head. What were we to do short of actually locating a semi-truck and persuading its swarthy driver to let us send our modest sedan careening toward it at high speeds? The debate remained unsettled.
I remained a believer, Sarah the apostate.
Last night I located this clip provided by the miracle men of MythBusters:
Thank you MythBusters. You saved my marriage.
- zack -
don’t doubt “the hoff”! awesome clip!
My man and I have had a few passionate, furious arguments about whether or not you can lose on the first click in Minesweeper. The official Windows Minesweeper game, that is.
I actually looked up the code, and there is a line that basically says, “If the first click is on a mine, move the mine to somewhere else.” So it is literally impossible to lose on the first click!
Mike however, still swears that it has happened to him.
I never questioned whether Knight Rider could drive up onto the semi. Of course it’s totally possible. And frankly, I don’t want to live in a world where it’s not.
I think it’s funny that the definition of a saved marriage is one in which the man is right, the woman wrong. I always suspected as much.
Schmidtty: In Zack’s defense, I believe he intended to convey that it saved our marriage, (a gross exaggeration) because it solved the argument, not because he won. He’s being honest when he’s saying it’s one of the worst, most consistent fights we’ve ever had. We’d had several discussions about this that have left me fuming and in tears. Even if it would have proven to be true that the cars did indeed, as I argued, ROCKET OFF THE TRAILER AT DOUBLE THEIR ORIGINAL SPEED, Zack still would have said the same thing about the Mythbusters clip. He was just happy to have that argument behind us once and for all.
And, for those of you who are smart enough to realize that the fight surely wasn’t about physics, but instead, simply triggered by the discussion of physics: yes. Yes, we did discuss the underlying issues, as well. Those were solved long before we ever found the Mythbusters video.
